This is a quick one for week nights.
Gyros are usually made with ground lamb. In this version, we’ll just be throwing some thinly sliced meat onto the grill. Quick and easy.
You can buy a chunk of roast when it is on sale and slice it up thin. It helps to pop it into the freezer for a little while before slicing.
Gyros with Cucumber Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 Petite Sirloin, Chuck Roast, or other Roast sliced very thin
- salt
- pepper
- garlic powder
- oregano
- 2-3 tbsp lemon juice
- olive oil
- sliced tomato
- lettuce
- sliced onion
- pita bread
- Tzaziki homemade or store-bought
Instructions
- Season the sliced roast to your liking with with salt, pepper, garlic powder, oregano, lemon juice and a touch of olive oil.
- Let the meat rest until it comes to room temperature (this is optional, but will result in more tender and flavorful meat).
- Grill the meat. Keep an eye on it. It should only take a few minutes per side.
- Warm the pita in a pan.
- Serve the grilled steak in a pita with lettuce, tomato, onions and Tzaziki.
Notes
You can make your own Tzaziki sauce if you’d like. A word on that – you do need to chill it in the refrigerator for a while to allow the flavors to marry.
The recipe for that is :
- 1 shredded cucumber, drained and salted
- 1 cup greek yogurt
- 2 tbs olive oil
- 2 tbs dried dill
- 1 small minced garlic clove
- Splash of lemon
- Salt to taste
Alternatively, you can get pre-made Tzaziki. I stopped making my own after I tried this brand:
It is the perfect texture and saves time. Both the Joseph’s and the Cedar’s brand are very good.
If you are using it on a salad, it will stick to the greens in the same way that the dressing sticks in a Cesar salad. It is awesome with a little bit of feta and a few olives.
